FAQ
The world ie experiencing an obesity epidemic, which is in no small part due to the extreme quantities of added sugar in daily diets. Though we’ve been living in a “better for you” movement for the last 20 years, the key driver of over consumption of added sugar on a daily basis is sugary beverage.
From 2000 to 2018 the prevalence of obesity has jumped from 30% to 43% in the US. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer that are some of the leading causes of preventable, premature death, and have driven the associated annual medical costs to over $200B.
We want to supply a low to no sugar beverage that can deliver on the better for you, without counter balancing with too much sugar. Our hope is Ruby can help people wean off sugar by reducing sugar consumption.
Hibiscus is a tropical and subtropical flower. It's a global plant, and has been used for centuries as an ingredient in food and beverage. It's most well known for its use as a tea, made from dried parts of the hibiscus plant. The liquid is deep red in color. It has sweet and tart flavors, similar to cranberry or dried cherries, and may be consumed hot or iced. That's right, you can just as easily put Ruby in the microwave and have a wonderful hot cup of hibiscus tea! For more info on the plant, check out our "History of Hibiscus" series in the Ruby Journal.
What a great questions! Hibiscus is truly a global plant: it's grown everywhere from Southeast Asia to South America to The United States to Central America to West Africa, and on and on and on. We tested a number of different strains of hibiscus, and found that hibiscus sabdariffa, which is indigenous to South East Asia and West Africa, had an exceptional flavor profile. Thereafter we focused on finding an ethical farm to work with, and were able to locate a phenomenal partner in Burkina Faso. For more info on the global uses (and growth) of hibiscus, check out our ABOUT page and/or our History of Hibiscus series in the Ruby Journal.
Hibiscus has 2x more antioxidants than pomegranate juice or green tea. It's known as a natural remedy to treat hypertension and lower blood pressure. All of those antioxidants happen to be good for your hair and skin too...
Did we mention the electrolytes? Yup, it's got those too. Superhydration. And all of the vitamin C in hibiscus is an amazing immunity builder.
But we became obsessed with Ruby because it's a great alternative to sweets and has been known to be a great remedy for sugar cravings thanks to it's naturally tart (and slightly sweet) flavor profile.
The American Heart Association (AHA) has long recommended limiting added sugars to 24 grams per day (6 teaspoons) for women and 36 grams (9 teaspoons) per day for men. Even beverages that claim to be lightly sweetened tend to have multipliers of that daily recommended dose in a single serving.
We know how difficult it is to kick sugar (seriously, we do) and our goal is to help people wean off of sugar any way they see fit, whether that is reducing their sugar intake, or cutting it out completely. Our lightly sweetened SKU (which has only 4g of sugar in it) is an amazing first step in reducing daily sugar consumption, and that's something to smile about.
Great question. There is no difference. Our hibiscus water is made from cut and sifted hibiscus leaves, the same that you would use to make a hot cup of hibiscus tea (or iced cup!) We ambient brew the leaves, and have found that the process gives a less astringent flavor profile than your everyday "hibiscus tea," and thus felt hibiscus water was a little more on point. But you can call it whatever you like. Except Frank. NEVER call it "Hibiscus Frank."
We love to drink Ruby with a morning coffee, the bitterness of the coffee brings out the brightness of hibiscus.
Ruby also happens to be a phenomenal mixer, might we recommend tequila, mezcal or vodka? (Because Ruby has no sugar, hangovers go bye-bye.
Thanks to all the electrolytes Ruby has, it also happens to be a great post-work out bev.
An awfully funny question to ask, while you're standing right in it. Perhaps this represents a bit of Plato's Allegory of the Cave? Just follow the white rabbit.
